THE Government of Guyana’s alternative access road linking Ruimzeight to Tuschen, with construction underway to ease congestion on the busy “west side” road and give motorists a faster route between the two communities.
The project is being executed jointly by the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Housing, said Collin Gittens, Head of the Ministry of Public Works’ Special Projects Unit, during a recent site visit.
Gittens said the Special Projects Unit is upgrading and strengthening the existing sections of roadway before giving them an asphaltic finish, while the Ministry of Housing is constructing the new sections and interconnecting bridges required to link the route into a continuous alternative corridor.

“This road has been done in a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Housing and the Special Projects Unit of the Ministry of Public Works, where the Special Projects Unit will be upgrading and strengthening all the existing road and bringing it to an asphaltic finish, while the Ministry of Housing will be doing all the interconnecting bridges and executing the construction of new sections along the corridor,” he said.
Gittens said that the West Coast Road has become heavily congested, prompting President Dr Irfaan Ali to launch the initiative to construct an alternative route.
“As you all may know, the West Coast Road has become heavily congested, and His Excellency Dr Irfaan Ali has come up with an initiative to construct an alternative road to ease the congestion,” he said.
Once completed, the route will give motorists travelling between the West Bank Demerara and West Coast Demerara another option, offering relief to commuters who currently rely heavily on the West Coast Road, particularly during peak hours.
Gittens said the project is intended not only to create another road, but to improve traffic movement and cut travel time along the corridor.
“This will bring a significant ease in travel along the West Coast Road and also reduce the travel time along the corridor,” he said, adding: “This is a government initiative, and its intent is to alleviate the traffic congestion and, of course, to provide safe and fast travel for commuters along the route.”
The initiative forms part of the government’s wider effort to respond to growing demand on the existing road networks, as communities along the corridor continue to expand and traffic volumes increase.
