IN just eight days, the 18th running of the Guyana Cup is being staged at the Rising Sun Turf Club, where over 66 million dollars in cash and prizes are up for grabs.
Organiser Andre Rochford says that they are 80% complete with the final bits expected to go in this week.
“Everything is in place; we are like 80 percent complete with the venue. we have 680 feet of covered bleachers along the homestretch which is the stretch to the finish line, we have close to 5 VIP areas, we have the elevated VIP, that is a two-story VIP that is for our tier 1 sponsors, we have a tier 2 VIP which is at the end of the track as well.”
He says that they have created more infield parking, and they will be set and ready next week.
“By next week Wednesday we are going to be 100 percent complete and ready for the largest horse racing meet in the Caribbean, the Guyana Cup, carded for Sunday the 23rd. It starts at 9am.”
This year sees close to a dozen new horses arriving for the events, which is set to pay out more than 65 million dollars in prizes over 14 races on the day.
Top stables Jagdeo Racing, JS Racing, Slingerz, and Jumbo Jet Racing are among the top stables that are seeking glory with the new horses that landed in the country recently for the Guyana Cup.
The feature race, the Banks Guyana Cup, will pay out 22.5 million dollars for the Guyana Cup champion stable.
The Guyana Cup in 2025 was won by the horse Dataman, representing Master Z Racing Stables.
Other than the feature race, 7.5 million will go towards the winner of the Peter Lewis Sprint, while Forrester’s Imported Derby (One Mile) will also fetch a 7-5-million-dollar purse.
The Mohamed’s Excavating Sir Balaji Derby (One Mile) will pay out 5.5 million dollars while the J’s Imported Juvenile Fillies Sprint (5 ½ Furlongs) will see the winner collecting 3.7 million dollars.
The 9 other races will see winners collecting more than a million dollars, starting with the Locally Bred Dash, E-Class (One Miler), F-Class, and H-Class races for Local Maidens, J-Class (One Miler), K-Class (One Miler), and L-Class Sprint over One Mile.
General admission tickets are GY$5,000, and VVIP experience is GY$25,000.
Patrons will also have the opportunity to win a brand new four-door SinoTruk pickup.
