–proposed works to improve infrastructure, strengthen quality of life for residents, President Ali says

ANNA Regina is being positioned for a major community upgrade, with the government outlining a series of interventions aimed at improving drainage, roadside infrastructure, lighting, public spaces and the overall environment of the Essequibo Coast township.

The proposed works form part of the government’s Model Village Initiative and were presented to residents during a public consultation at the Anna Regina Secondary School.

The plan is being developed around the existing characteristics of the town of Anna Regina, which covers approximately 253 acres and has 407 households, alongside a wide range of public, commercial, recreational and community facilities.

The community currently has 29 government, utility and civic offices, six educational facilities, five medical facilities and pharmacies, and one central power plant.

Anna Regina also has a significant commercial and hospitality presence, including 50 commercial operations, 14 food and restaurant establishments, six hotels and accommodation facilities, two financial institutions, one taxi service along with a marketing centre.

The town’s community and recreational infrastructure includes four public spaces, three places of worship, two cemeteries or burial grounds, a recreational park, the Anna Regina National Stadium and a monument.

Against this backdrop, the government’s proposed interventions are expected to focus heavily on improving the town’s infrastructure while creating a cleaner, safer and more attractive environment.

One of the key components of the proposed plan is the upgrading of community drains throughout Anna Regina.

The drainage programme is being promoted under the theme “Cleaner Drains. Safer Neighbourhoods. A Healthier Tomorrow,” with the proposed works intended to improve water flow and reduce the impact of flooding on residents and properties.

The plan includes the construction of concrete drains, either open or covered, designed to provide more efficient drainage.

Crusher-run shoulders are also proposed along both sides of the drains to provide greater stability, improve access and give the upgraded areas a cleaner finish.

Modern streetlights are also proposed at selected locations to improve visibility and enhance safety during the night.

According to the proposed plan presented by Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Madanlall Ramraj, the improved drainage system is expected to help prevent flooding, protect properties and contribute to a cleaner and healthier community.

The interventions are also expected to improve the appearance of neighbourhoods while creating infrastructure that can better withstand future challenges.

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali said the Model Village Initiative is not simply about physical infrastructure, but also about creating communities where residents can live comfortably, safely and with access to opportunities.

He said technical teams have been assessing Anna Regina’s infrastructure and developing proposals but also stressed that residents must have a say in determining the priorities for their community.

The consultation, therefore, provided an opportunity for residents to examine the proposals and identify issues that they believe should be addressed.

Safety is another major component of the proposed development.

President Ali pointed to the possibility of improved emergency preparedness through facilities such as fire hydrants, while also highlighting CCTV coverage as a potential tool for crime prevention, detection and community safety.

The proposed model community concept also takes into consideration recreational and public spaces, with the aim of creating an environment that residents can enjoy and take pride in.

With Anna Regina already serving as an important commercial and administrative centre in Region Two, the development plan is also expected to complement economic activity.

President Ali said Region Two has considerable potential in areas including agriculture, agro-processing and tourism, and that community infrastructure must be developed in a manner that supports these sectors.

Improved public spaces, drainage, lighting, recreation and other facilities could therefore contribute not only to the appearance of Anna Regina but also to its attractiveness as a place to live, conduct business and visit.

The proposed interventions are being guided by the broader objectives of building strong infrastructure, stronger communities, sustainable growth and lasting impact.

The government’s vision is to transform Anna Regina through investments that address immediate infrastructure needs while laying the foundation for long-term development.

For residents, the proposed drainage and community improvements are expected to bring practical benefits, including better water management, safer streets, improved public spaces and a cleaner environment.

The Model Village Initiative is therefore being presented as a comprehensive approach to transforming Anna Regina, with the stated goal of “transforming today and building tomorrow” through infrastructure that serves both current residents and future generations.

The final interventions are expected to reflect feedback received from residents as Government continues the planning and consultation process.
