ATTORNEY General Anil Nandlall, SC, has condemned what he described as scurrilous and disrespectful attacks against Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) President, Justice Winston Anderson.
Speaking on his Issues in the News programme, Nandlall addressed recent reports concerning leaked internal correspondence involving CCJ judges.
He highlighted a joint statement by Caribbean judicial heads expressing grave concern over the breach of confidentiality, while reaffirming confidence in the CCJ.
Nandlall also pointed to a statement from the Bar Council of the Bar Association of Guyana, stressing the need to protect the court’s institutional integrity.
He said the CCJ is Guyana’s final appellate court and stands at the apex of the country’s justice system.
Nandlall warned that while criticism of the court is permissible, it must be expressed respectfully and must not scandalise or attack the court or its members.
He said such conduct could bring the administration of justice into disrepute and potentially constitute contempt of court.
Nandlall specifically condemned a Facebook post targeting Justice Winston Anderson, describing it as a grossly disrespectful and scurrilous attack. (NCN)
