–during grand reception in New Delhi to mark 60 years of diplomatic ties
THE Guyana High Commission in New Delhi recently hosted a diplomatic reception to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Guyana’s independence and 60 years of diplomatic relations between Guyana and India.
According to information from the Guyana High Commission, the event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, senior officials of the Government of India, business leaders, representatives of partner institutions, and members of the Guyanese diaspora, underscoring the strength and breadth of the friendship between the two nations.
High Commissioner of Guyana to India, Dharamkumar Seeraj, delivered the feature address of the evening, reflecting on Guyana’s six-decade journey as an independent nation.
In his remarks, he reaffirmed Guyana’s unwavering commitment to international law, sovereignty, and the peaceful settlement of disputes, principles that have guided the country’s conduct on the global stage since independence.
The High Commissioner also referred to Guyana’s remarkable economic transformation, highlighting the country’s emergence as the world’s fastest-growing economy.
He pointed to Guyana’s growing global leadership on food security, energy security, and climate security, citing key initiatives including the Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030, the Global Biodiversity Alliance, and the CARICOM Agri-Food Systems Agenda as evidence of the country’s forward-looking approach to sustainable development.
Turning to bilateral relations, High Commissioner Seeraj celebrated six decades of friendship between Guyana and India, noting the steady expansion of cooperation across healthcare, energy, agriculture, technology, and education.
He emphasised the shared commitment both nations hold toward sustainable development and South-South co-operation as a foundation for continued partnership in the years ahead.
Shri Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles of India, served as Chief Guest for the occasion.
In his address, he reaffirmed the enduring friendship between Guyana and India and expressed India’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral co-operation for the mutual benefit of both countries.
Beyond the formal proceedings, the evening offered guests a rich celebration of Guyanese culture.
Captivating steel-pan performances brought Guyanese and Caribbean music to life, while a vibrant performance by the Indian Air Force band added a distinctly cross-cultural dimension to the celebrations.
Displays throughout the venue highlighted distinguished Guyanese who have excelled in the fields of arts, sports, diplomacy, and literature, offering attendees a glimpse into the nation’s diverse achievements.
The reception also featured a showcase of locally produced Guyanese products, and guests were treated to a tasting of Guyana’s world-renowned rums alongside authentic Guyanese cuisine.
