THE Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has installed the first component of a new MRI system, marking a significant step toward launching the first MRI service in Guyana’s public healthcare sector.

The installation was captured this week as work progresses on the new GPHC Medical Imaging Centre, which is currently under construction.

Once complete, the centre will house the MRI machine alongside an additional CT scanner, a Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (Cath Lab), and other advanced radiology services.

GPHC, in information on its Facebook page, described the milestone as “just the beginning” of a broader effort to modernise diagnostic care at the public hospital, with more updates expected as the project moves closer to completion.

The MRI service, once operational, will give patients in the public healthcare system access to advanced imaging previously unavailable outside private facilities, reducing the need for costly referrals elsewhere and improving diagnostic capacity nationwide.

GPHC has indicated further announcements will follow as the Medical Imaging Centre nears completion and the MRI system moves toward launch.
