THE Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is continuing its nationwide public education campaign aimed at increasing consumer awareness of utility services and strengthening public understanding of consumer rights through a series of community outreach programmes across Guyana.
As part of the initiative, the Commission’s Consumer and Public Affairs Division conducted an awareness session on July 14, 2026, with the Chairman and Councillors of the Buxton/Foulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), providing participants with information on the Commission’s role and the mechanisms available for resolving disputes with utility service providers.
The session formed part of the PUC’s monthly awareness programme, which targets schools, regional and remote offices of public and private institutions, as well as members of the general public.
During the outreach, PUC officials outlined the Commission’s mandate, the utility companies and service providers it regulates, the types of complaints it investigates, the number portability system, and the procedures consumers should follow when lodging complaints. Participants were also presented with an overview of the most common complaints received by the Commission.
Residents and councillors engaged directly with Commission representatives, raising concerns related to utility billing, the quality of services provided and available subsidies. The PUC said these issues were addressed during the interactive session.
The Commission noted that the outreach programme is intended to ensure citizens are better informed about their rights as consumers and the avenues available for seeking redress when disputes arise with utility providers.
According to the PUC, the initiative also seeks to strengthen relationships with communities while promoting greater understanding of both consumer rights and responsibilities.
The Public Utilities Commission is the statutory body responsible for regulating public utility services in Guyana, including the electricity and telecommunications sectors. Among its functions are investigating consumer complaints, ensuring service providers comply with established standards, and promoting fair and efficient utility services.
The Commission said it will continue to host awareness programmes in communities across the country as part of its ongoing public education efforts.
Consumers seeking additional information can visit the Commission’s website or contact the PUC during normal business hours through its telephone or WhatsApp services.
