RELATIVES of those still missing following the MV Barima tragedy were on Sunday given a live view of the deep-diving operation at the wreck site as President Dr. Irfaan Ali updated them on the ongoing search and recovery effort.

During a meeting at the Charity Command Centre, families watched live footage transmitted from the operation at sea, providing them with a first-hand look at the challenging work being undertaken by specialist divers beneath the water.

The President told relatives that search and recovery operations would continue through Sunday night and into Monday, as local, French and Trinidadian dive teams press ahead with efforts to locate those who remain unaccounted for.

During the engagement, family members also raised concerns about how the area where the MV Barima sank would be recognised if some of their loved ones are never recovered. They asked whether the wreck site could be designated as a memorial bearing the names of those who perished and those who remain missing.

Responding to the request, President Ali assured the relatives that any such decision would rest entirely with the affected families.

He said the government would honour and respect whatever decision the families collectively make regarding the future of the site.

The President has remained at the Charity Command Centre, receiving regular operational briefings while continuing to meet with grieving relatives as the complex search and recovery mission enters another day.
