A 28-year-old man died and two children were hospitalised for observation following an apparent electrocution incident at Dartmouth Village, Essequibo Coast, on Monday evening.

The dead man has been identified as Kelton Benn of Ptolemy Avenue, Dartmouth. Police said the incident occurred at about 17:30 hours.

According to preliminary investigations, Benn had gone to use an outdoor toilet located at the back of the yard but failed to return. A relative subsequently went in search of him and found him lying motionless near a chicken coop.

Police said further inquiries revealed that an electrical wire had been connected from the house to the chicken coop several months ago to provide lighting.

A nine-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl were later found shaking while leaning against the structure. Both children were taken to the Lima Regional Hospital, where they were admitted for observation.

Benn was also transported to the hospital, where he was examined and pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor.

His body is currently at the Lima Regional Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The Guyana Power and Light Inc. was contacted and the electrical wire was subsequently disconnected.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
