MINISTER of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, on Friday commissioned the new Bethany Multi-purpose Building, officially opened the library housed in the facility, and handed over a truck to the community.
This marked another significant investment by the Government of Guyana in the development of hinterland communities.
The new multi-purpose building is expected to serve residents of Bethany located in Region Two and neighbouring communities along the Supenaam Creek by providing a modern space for educational, social and community activities. The addition of the library is also expected to enhance learning opportunities for children, youths and adults.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister Manickchand expressed her delight at delivering another important project for the people of Bethany. She noted that the facility will support a wide range of educational and community programmes, creating opportunities for learning and development throughout the area.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament and Toshao of Bethany Village, Sonia Latchman, said the community continues to benefit from sustained government investments aimed at improving the quality of life for residents.
She highlighted that the new facility and library are further evidence of the government’s commitment to ensuring that hinterland communities receive the resources needed for continued growth and development.
Residents welcomed the new investments and expressed gratitude to the government for responding to the needs of the community.
Amanda Charles, a resident of Bethany, said the facility will be of tremendous benefit, particularly to young people.
“We are very thankful for this initiative. Our community is transforming and developing, and this is what we want. We would like to thank the Government of Guyana for this investment,” Charles said.
She added that the multi-purpose building will provide a safe and welcoming environment where children can socialise, participate in educational activities and strengthen community ties.
The commissioning formed part of the first day of the government’s two-day Cabinet outreach in the region. Throughout the day, ministers engaged residents in different communities.
