THE Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is urging citizens across the country’s 10 administrative regions to exercise extreme caution as dry and intense weather conditions associated with the El Niño period increase the risk of grass and structural fires.
In a statement issued from the Office of the Chief Fire Officer, the GFS warned that soaring temperatures and dried-out vegetation have created conditions where even a small spark can quickly develop into a large and dangerous fire.
The Fire Service stressed that preventing fires requires collective action and is encouraging members of the public to avoid practices that could trigger blazes during the dry season.
Among its key recommendations is a call for the public to refrain from burning garbage, dried leaves and other yard waste, noting that sudden wind gusts can easily carry embers into dry grass or nearby buildings. Farmers are also being urged to avoid using fire to clear agricultural lands and instead consider safer alternatives such as manual clearing or composting.
The GFS is further advising homeowners to clear dried grass, dead bushes and piles of wood from around their properties to create a protective buffer that can help slow the spread of grass fires.
Residents are also encouraged to reduce the risk of electrical fires by unplugging appliances that are not in use and avoiding the overloading of electrical outlets and power strips, particularly during periods of high temperatures. Parents and guardians are reminded to keep matches and lighters safely out of the reach of children.
Businesses, farmers and industrial operators located near heavily vegetated areas are being encouraged to establish and maintain firebreaks to protect their properties from approaching bushfires. The Fire Service also advised operators of heavy machinery and vehicles to ensure their equipment is properly maintained to prevent exhaust sparks from igniting dry vegetation.
The GFS reminded the public that lighting fires which threaten lives or property, or indiscriminately burning rubbish, is illegal under the laws of Guyana and can have devastating consequences.
