THE Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development is advancing plans for the revitalisation of the historic Stabroek Market and its surrounding areas, with officials emphasising a people-centred approach aimed at transforming Georgetown into a more functional, accessible and attractive capital city while preserving its cultural heritage.
The initiative moved forward on Tuesday as Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, met with technical personnel from the King’s Foundation to review preliminary concepts and discuss strategies for modernising one of Georgetown’s most iconic commercial and cultural landmarks.
According to the ministry, discussions centred on creating a revitalised urban environment that better serves vendors, businesses, commuters and visitors, while enhancing the overall experience of those who live, work and travel within the city.
Officials also explored broader opportunities to improve public spaces, promote sustainable urban development and strengthen Georgetown’s appeal as both a commercial hub and tourism destination. Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring that future development initiatives remain inclusive, protect existing livelihoods and respond to the evolving needs of the capital’s residents and stakeholders.
The proposed revitalisation of Stabroek Market forms part of a wider vision for Georgetown’s urban renewal, balancing modernisation with the preservation of the city’s distinctive historical and architectural character.
During the meeting, Minister Manickchand reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a consultative planning process, stressing that communities and stakeholders will play an integral role in shaping the future of the project.
She noted that safeguarding the historical significance of Stabroek Market and the surrounding urban landscape remains a key priority as planning advances.
The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development said it will continue to engage relevant stakeholders throughout the planning process and will provide additional updates as the initiative progresses.
