— Gov’t to distribute approximately $3B in support
RICE farmers across Guyana will begin receiving cash subsidies from next week as the Government moves to fulfil a commitment made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali to support the industry amid ongoing global challenges.
In a statement on Monday, Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha announced that the Ministry of Agriculture, through the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB), is ready to commence the distribution of payments following the completion of the registration and verification process for eligible farmers.
The commitment was first made by President Ali during a consultation with hundreds of rice farmers at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) on April 30, where the Government pledged financial assistance to cushion the impact of increasing pressures on agricultural production and international markets.
Following consultations with farmers, it was agreed that the support would be provided through direct cash transfers. Farmers cultivating 50 acres or less will receive $15,000 per acre, while those farming more than 50 acres will receive $10,000 per acre.
According to Minister Mustapha, the Ministry completed the registration of eligible farmers and undertook an extensive verification exercise after the conclusion of the harvest to ensure the process remained transparent and accountable.
“That verification process has now been completed, paving the way for the commencement of payments next week,” the Minister said.
Approximately $3 billion has been allocated by the Government to finance the initiative.
Minister Mustapha said the investment demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to supporting rice farmers and protecting one of Guyana’s key agricultural industries.
“Approximately $3 billion has been allocated by the PPP/C Government for this initiative, reflecting the Government’s unwavering commitment to supporting rice farmers, safeguarding livelihoods, and strengthening Guyana’s rice industry,” he stated.
He added that the Government remains committed to working closely with rice farmers to ensure the sector continues to expand, remains competitive and contributes to national food security, economic growth and rural development.
