(CMC) – Led by a four-wicket haul by Lahiru Kumara, Sri Lanka ended day one of their four-day warmup match against a West Indies Select XI in the ascendancy on Thursday.

Kirk McKenzie scored a defiant half century but none of the other top order batters turned up to the party as the home side was bundled out for 205 in 61.4 overs.

Sri Lanka then lost opener Lahiru Udara cheaply for seven to end the day on 38 for one, trailing the Select XI by 167 runs.

Things could have been much worse for the Select XI had it not been for the efforts of their lower-order batters, who added valuable runs after they had slumped to 123 for seven.

Ackeem Auguste put on 38 runs for the opening wicket with McKenzie before becoming the first of Kumara’s victims after scoring 12.

Two overs later and without a run added, Jonathan Drakes edged a delivery from Kumara behind to the keeper.

McKenzie and Kevin Wickham set about repairing the damage during a 53-run partnership for the third wicket that carried the Select XI to a comfortable position of 91 for two.

However, Wickham’s dismissal for 20 sparked a mini collapse that saw the Select XI lose five wickets for 32 runs to crumble to 123 for seven.

Through the efforts of Keemo Paul, who scored 36 off 51 balls, and tailenders Nial Smith, who scored an unbeaten 19, Ojay Shields’ 16 and Alzarri Joseph, who made 12, the Select XI were able to add some respectability to their total.

Kumara ended with 4-39, while Asitha Fernando took 2-26.
