- Focus now moves to indoor season
THE Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) President, Phillip Fernandes, says that the Diamond Jubilee Cup hosted to celebrate the country’s independence anniversary, which concluded on Monday, was a huge success.
The GHB boss contended that the tournament showcased the talent pool of the board, adding “The Providence National Stadium was made available for the tournament, and it was really a welcomed facility that provided for the best quality of hockey to be played. Everybody enjoyed the games; the players were glad to be out on such a great surface.”
Fernandes says some competitive matches in the group stage culminated in some exciting final clashes in both male and female categories.
“The hockey board has to move out of the outdoor season now because of the inclement weather, and we would normally go to our indoor schedule; however, there are some repairs to be done to our national facilities, and therefore, we will have a bit of a hold-up, and it looks like when that becomes available again, it should be around August. Then we will try to go into our indoor season.’
He said they will now focus on training and building the club teams as they host some mini-tournaments on artificial surfaces at the Old Fort Club’s facility in South Georgetown and at the GCC mini-pitch at Bourda Ground.
On Monday, the Pepsi Hikers side defeated Old Fort Top Form 4-2 in a thriller, while the GCC Elite women got the better of Hikers women to take the inaugural titles at the National Stadium, Providence.
