CITIZENS can soon expect to have access to an E-wallet system that will allow important personal documents, including passports, driver’s licenses and birth certificates, to be stored on their smartphones, according to Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, Zulfikar Ally.

Speaking on Wednesday at the opening of the new Government Service Centre in Port Mourant, Ally said the initiative is part of the government’s plans to modernise the delivery of public services across the country.

“Coming up we will be working towards having your E-wallet, to having your passport, your driver’s licence, your birth certificates, all of that on your smartphones, that you can go anywhere and show and people can scan it.”

He noted that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic administration has been taking steady steps to ensure citizens outside of Georgetown have equal access to government services.

“Over the years His Excellency the President, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic has always been making incremental steps to ensure that you have access to services like what someone will have in Georgetown.”

Ally then noted that the government’s vision extends beyond the establishment of service centres and is focused on improving the overall quality of life for citizens through modern and efficient systems.

“We have greater things coming from you. We want to ensure that you have a quality of life that people in other parts of the world are enjoying because the things that we are doing we are taking you to have that experience. The President is taking you to have an experience, one that is modern, one that is efficient and one that is truly transparent as well.”

The minister also emphasised the importance of preparing citizens for the country’s rapid development, stating that it is his responsibility to prepare both current and future generations to benefit from emerging opportunities.

He urged residents to take advantage of educational opportunities available through the GOAL programme and the University of Guyana, with both offering free access to higher education.

“The opportunities are there for you, there is nothing that you living here in Berbice do not have than what the people in Georgetown or the people in the East Bank or the East Coast have, you have access to all of these things as well, and these are things that you have to pay very careful attention to,” he noted adding, “It is up to you to take advantage of all the opportunities that are there.”
