THE Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, on Wednesday, launched a leadership training programme for Amerindian Village Councils aimed at strengthening governance, leadership, and decision-making at the community level to support sustainable development across Indigenous villages.
The training, being held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre under the theme, “Empowering Village Councils for Sustainable Village Governance,” brings together representatives of Village Councils from across the country for capacity-building sessions focused on improving local administration and community leadership.
Funded by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, the initiative seeks to equip village leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage community affairs, address local challenges, and advance development priorities within their villages.
The programme forms part of the Government’s broader efforts to strengthen local governance structures in Amerindian communities and ensure that Village Councils are better positioned to deliver services and make informed decisions that benefit residents.
Several senior government officials attended the opening ceremony, including Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Hon. Sarah Browne-Shadeek; Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Hon. Gail Teixeira; Member of Parliament, Alister Charlie; Permanent Secretary, Ryan Toolsiram; Ministerial Adviser, Yvonne Pearson; Ministerial Planner, Miriam Andrew, and Chairman of the National Toshaos Council, Derrick John.
Officials underscored the importance of effective leadership and accountability in village governance, noting that empowered and well-trained councils play a critical role in advancing sustainable development, preserving Indigenous heritage, and improving the quality of life in hinterland communities.
The leadership training is expected to continue with sessions focusing on governance practices, community development planning, decision-making, and other key areas designed to enhance the effectiveness of Village Councils throughout Guyana
