THE launch of the Ali Baksh Birth Anniversary Cricket Tournament was held over the weekend at Freedom House, Anna Regina.
The tournament, which commemorates the life and contributions of the late Ali Baksh, is scheduled to commence on June 13, 2026.
The programme was called to order by Chairman Basil Persaud, after which a one-minute silence was observed in honour of the late Ali Baksh.
Delivering the opening remarks, Regional Chairman Devin Mohan described the late Baksh as a visionary leader who played a pivotal role in advancing the development of Region Two.
He noted that the tournament serves as a fitting tribute to a man whose dedication and leadership helped shape the region’s growth and progress.
The keynote address was delivered by Humace Oodit, a Central Committee Member, who paid tribute to the family, especially his wife, Patsy Baksh.
Oodit described the tournament as a long-awaited event and reflected on Ali Baksh’s selfless contributions to uplifting communities and improving the lives of those around him.
According to Oodit, the region must never forget the many positive contributions made by Ali Baksh, whose work helped define the identity and progress of the region. He further stated that the cricket tournament will continue annually as a means of honouring his life and legacy.
During a reflection segment, Hardeo Singh, speaking from the United States of America, recalled Ali Baksh’s passion for bringing happiness to others. He noted that Ali Baksh served as one of the longest-serving Regional Chairmen before becoming Minister of Agriculture.
Singh encouraged participating teams to play their best as they compete in memory of a respected leader. He also reflected on Ali Baksh’s love for meeting people and maintaining strong connections within communities.
The official tournament fixtures and competition rules were presented by Ramnarine Ragubar and Wazeeda Bacchus.
An overview of the tournament revealed that matches will be played at Reliance, Richmond, and the Anna Regina National Stadium, which will serve as the main venue.
A total of 16 male teams, 6 masters teams, and 2 female teams will participate in the competition. Matches will be played using the big ball format, with organisers emphasizing a high standard of discipline, sportsmanship, and respect throughout the tournament.
The tournament will be contested on a knockout basis, with each match consisting of ten overs per side, subject to adjustments due to weather or time constraints.
Teams are required to submit a list of fifteen players and provide a scorer for each match. Any matters not specifically addressed in the tournament rules will be governed by the current ICC Cricket Rules and Regulations.
Delivering the vote of thanks, PYO Chairman Faraz Baksh stated that the Progressive Youth Organisation was proud to honour the memory of the late Minister of Agriculture and Regional Chairman. He praised Ali Baksh’s outstanding service and contributions to the people of Region Two and Guyana.
Among those in attendance were the Baksh’s wife, daughters, granddaughter, family members, comrades, and supporters who gathered to celebrate the life, service, and enduring legacy of a leader whose contributions continue to inspire generations.
