POLICE have launched an investigation after armed bandits robbed a West Bank Demerara farmer of $12 million in cash and four cellular phones during a home invasion on Wednesday night.
The robbery occurred at about 20:15 hrs at Uitkomst, Canal No. 1, and targeted a 64-year-old farmer.
According to police, the farmer was sitting under a shed on the lower flat of his residence with relatives when two men entered the yard.
Both suspects were reportedly armed with what appeared to be handguns.
Investigators said the men ordered the occupants into the kitchen area and forced them to lie on the floor while demanding cash and valuables.
During the ordeal, the farmer was allegedly assaulted before being forced to lead the suspects to a white bucket inside the house where cash was being stored.
The bandits reportedly escaped with $12 million in cash and four cellular phones valued at a combined $400,000.
Police said the suspects fled the scene in a silver-tinted Toyota Axio motor car, registration number unknown, travelling in a western direction.
No serious injuries were reported and no shots were fired during the incident.
Several persons have since been questioned and investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the area as they continue to hunt for the suspects
