A YOUNG pregnant woman and her partner are feared drowned after they disappeared while swimming at Unity Beach, East Coast Demerara, on Sunday afternoon.
Missing are 20-year-old Loydicia Waldron, known as “Loyda”, a sales assistant of Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara, and her partner, 31-year-old Special Constable Andri Francis, called “Bobby”, of the same address.
According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force, the couple encountered difficulties at about 14:00 hrs while swimming at Unity Beach.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Waldron reportedly began drifting out towards the Atlantic Ocean and called out for assistance. Francis, reportedly, went to her aid, but both were subsequently pulled under by the strong current and disappeared.
An alarm was raised and immediate searches were conducted at the beach and surrounding areas. However, efforts to locate the couple proved unsuccessful.
The incident has left relatives and friends devastated. Waldron, who was expecting a child with Francis, had been looking forward to her baby shower, which was scheduled for July 25.
Search efforts continued up to press time, with police and other responders combing the area in the hope of finding the missing pair.
Police said investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
