THE 2026 edition of the Commander’s Cup Youth Football Competition concluded in exciting fashion following two days of thrilling football action at the Sparendaam Community Centre Ground, East Coast Demerara.
Hosted annually by Regional Division 4 ‘C’ in collaboration with the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA), this year’s tournament was regarded as one of the biggest and most competitive editions to date, attracting 26 teams from Police Youth Groups and affiliated football clubs across East Coast Demerara.
Teams competed in the Under-13 and Under-17 categories, with players displaying impressive talent, discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Supporters also turned out in large numbers, creating an energetic atmosphere over the two days of competition.
In the Under-13 division, Plaisance United emerged champions, while Golden Grove Stars secured second place, and Melanie finished third. Joshua Connell was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Best Goalkeeper, while Shaquille Callender copped the award for Most Goals.
The under-17 category saw Melanie Football Club crowned champions ahead of BV/Triumph United in second place and Buxton United in third. Keena Petrie was named most valuable player, Jermaine Cox received the best goalkeeper award, and Trevon Glasgow finished as the leading goal scorer.
The Commander’s Cup continues to play an important role in youth development and community engagement by encouraging young people to participate in positive activities through sport.
Regional Commander of Division 4 ‘C’, Assistant Commissioner K. Pareshram, congratulated all participating teams, coaches and players for their performances and commendable display of sportsmanship during the tournament.
He also extended appreciation to the sponsors whose support contributed to the success of the competition. Sponsors included Guy America Construction Inc., Double D Trading and Distribution, Prestigious Imports and Exports, A & B Construction Inc., and Modern Graphics.
The Division also thanked the East Demerara Football Association, organisers, club officials, volunteers, supporters and members of the public for helping to make the event a success.
With another successful edition completed, organisers are already looking ahead to an even bigger Commander’s Cup competition next year as efforts continue to empower youths and strengthen communities through football.
