THE Ministry of Education and Guyana Power & Light Inc. (GPL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening technical education and expanding employment opportunities for students pursuing careers in the technical and industrial sectors.
The agreement will support GPL’s accelerated Technician Training Programme by creating a steady pipeline of skilled trainee technicians from several technical institutions across the country, including the Government Technical Institute, New Amsterdam Technical Institute, Essequibo Technical Institute, and the Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre.
Under the partnership, GPL and the participating institutions will collaborate to ensure training programmes are aligned with the needs of the power sector, equipping students with the technical competencies required for employment in the industry.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Sonia Parag described the initiative as an important step toward expanding opportunities for students throughout Guyana, particularly in technical education and career development.
Head of GPL’s Executive Management Committee, Kesh Nandlall, said the agreement comes at a crucial time as the company advances several major infrastructural projects that will require additional skilled workers to support expanding operations.
According to GPL, the initiative is intended to help the company maintain a highly trained workforce capable of meeting the increasing demands of Guyana’s electricity sector, while also giving students access to competency-based training, industry guidance, practical experience, and potential employment opportunities after completing their studies.
Representing GPL at the signing were Nandlall, Divisional Director Bal Persaud, and Human Resources Development Manager, Anthony Johnson.
The Ministry of Education delegation included Minister Parag, Permanent Secretary Shannielle Hoosein-Outar, Deputy Chief Education Officer Technical, Dr. Ritesh Tularam, and heads of the participating technical institutions.
GPL said the partnership forms part of its broader commitment to workforce development and supporting national growth through technical training and youth employment initiatives.
