– Health Ministry boosts hinterland healthcare with new fleet of vehicles

MINISTER of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, on Monday, handed over a new fleet of all-terrain vehicles, utility vehicles and motorcycles to four hinterland regions as part of the Ministry of Health’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare access in remote communities across Guyana.
The Ministry distributed approximately 13 all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), four utility vehicles (XUVs), and seven motorcycles to Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine to support healthcare delivery and emergency response services in hinterland communities.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Minister Anthony said the vehicles will assist health centres and hospitals in expanding outreach services and improving access to medical care for residents living in remote villages.
He explained that the additional transportation will enhance the ability of healthcare workers to travel to difficult-to-reach communities while also making it easier for patients to access health facilities and receive timely medical attention.
According to the Minister, the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen healthcare systems in hinterland regions, where transportation challenges and geographic barriers often affect the delivery of medical services.
The new fleet is expected to support routine medical outreaches, emergency response operations and the transportation of healthcare personnel and supplies across interior locations.
In recent years, the Ministry of Health has intensified efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and services in hinterland communities through the expansion of telemedicine, upgrading of regional health facilities, and investments in medical equipment and transportation. Officials have said these measures are aimed at ensuring more equitable access to healthcare services nationwide.
