MINISTER of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, on Tuesday, engaged a high-level delegation from Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in discussions aimed at deepening bilateral co-operation and expanding economic opportunities between Guyana and Brazil.

The meeting focused on strengthening regional integration frameworks, including Guyana’s potential accession as a full member of MERCOSUR, as well as improving trade and transportation links between the two South American neighbours.

The Brazilian delegation included Maria Cristina de Castro Martins, Ambassador Philip Fox-Drummond Gough, Secretary for Economic and Financial Affairs at the Brazilian Chancellery, and Ambassador Francisco Cannabrava, Director of the Department of MERCOSUR.

According to information from the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, discussions also examined the possibility of establishing direct flights between Guyana and Brazil as part of broader efforts to boost tourism, enhance regional connectivity, and address existing trade gaps.

The engagement comes amid growing economic and diplomatic ties between the two countries as Guyana continues to strengthen partnerships within South America. Increased co-operation with Brazil is seen as strategically important for trade expansion, infrastructure development, tourism growth, and broader regional integration.

Guyana’s possible accession to MERCOSUR would further position the country within one of South America’s major economic blocs, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia. Membership could provide expanded market access and greater opportunities for trade and investment.

Officials from both sides underscored their shared commitment to advancing sustainable economic development and fostering closer regional collaboration through strengthened diplomatic and commercial relations.
