-as Guyana hosts Mid-Term SIM Week 2026

GUYANA, through the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and the Guyana National Bureau of Standards, is hosting the Mid-Term SIM Week 2026, which will end on May 15, 2026.

This significant regional event is expected to bring together metrology experts, technical specialists, scientists, and representatives from across the Americas under the umbrella of the Inter-American Metrology System (SIM).

Mid-Term SIM Week, according to the GNBS, serves as a platform for scientific and technical collaboration, strengthening measurement standards and quality systems, knowledge sharing and innovation, advancing regional co-operation in metrology and calibration.

Speaking more about the event was Head of Legal Metrology Department at the GNBS, Shailendra Rai.

Rai explained that the Inter-American Metrology System promotes, supports and integrates measurement infrastructure across the Americas by ensuring global traceability to international systems of units of measurement.

Further, it strengthens National Metrology Institute (the GNBS), facilitates trade, and encourages innovation, while also ensuring consumer safety through collaboration among member nations.

“So, the meeting that we are having in Guyana is the council meeting, where they are going to be deliberating on matters relating to the operation and function of SIM. And in addition to that, they also have what we call the QSTF meetings as well. The QSTF is the Quality System Task Force that deals with the quality management systems for laboratories,” Rai explained.

In addition, the council members will discuss and coordinate activities relating to the quality systems for laboratories in terms of helping these laboratories to obtain accreditation to international standards.

There are already a number of activities planned for the week ahead. Among them are the QSTF meeting which will continue today at the GNBS and a symposium on Thursday to celebrate World Metrology Day, which is observed annually on May 20.
