EUROPEAN Union (EU) Ambassador to Guyana, Luca Pierantoni, has noted that Guyana and the EU are only scratching the surface of partnership potential, pointing to growing opportunities in business and innovation.

Pierantoni made these remarks recently while speaking during the EU delegation’s Europe Day observances here, indicating that there remains “enormous, largely unused potential” in the relationship between Guyana and Europe.

“When it comes to the relationship between the European Union and Guyana, there is one certainty: we are so far only tapping into a fraction of what is possible,” he said.

“There is enormous, largely unused potential of co-operation between us, potential that we must now strive to explore and realise,” he added.

The ambassador then outlined economic and technical co-operation, academic and cultural exchanges, and people-to-people connections as key pillars for expanding relations between Guyana and the EU.

He noted that Europe remains one of the world’s largest economies and said the bloc possesses significant expertise in areas including clean technology, strategic industries, research, and innovation.

According to Pierantoni, strengthening links between businesses, researchers, young professionals, and public institutions should remain a priority moving forward.

He pointed to a number of recent initiatives aimed at deepening co-operation, including business missions focused on health, agro-processing, digital technology, and connectivity.

Ambassador Pierantoni also referenced visits by Guyanese private-sector operators to several European countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Spain, alongside engagements with European companies interested in opportunities in Guyana.

Against this backdrop, he said that the EU’s Global Gateway agenda is increasingly serving as a platform to strengthen business-to-business partnerships and forge new alliances between European and Guyanese companies.

He also highlighted growing interest among European states in strengthening ties with Guyana.

“I have witnessed a growing interest by all member states to engage with Guyana, and I’m sure that we will see soon an expansion of new presence in the country, not only from a diplomatic and economic point of view, but also in terms of scientific, academic [and] culture.”

Meanwhile, Ambassador Pierantoni added that the European Union remains committed to building a stronger and more ambitious partnership with Guyana as co-operation between the two sides continues to expand.
