IN a heart-felt gesture just ahead of Mother’s Day, a lease agreement was officially handed over to Amrita Singh, a single mother of four, paving the way for the construction of a new home under President, Dr Irfaan Ali’s Men on Mission (MoM) initiative.
Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, on Saturday visited the woman at the location where he officially handed over the lease through GuySuCo and assured her that it was placed in her name.
“We give you this piece of land, we will build this house for you” the minister told the woman just ahead of Mother’s Day.
Singh’s husband tragically lost his life while working at sea and has endured years of hardship while striving to provide for her children.
With the support of the Men on Mission initiative, she will now have the opportunity to build a safer and more stable future for her family.
Construction of the new home is expected to commence shortly on the leased property and will be completed over the next two months by private contractor Rondhall Lewis.
“We will build a two-bedroom house for you and fence it and put light and water, so this here is your lease so nobody can’t put you out.”
The initiative is part of government’s iniatiative to support vulnerable families and ensure that citizens facing difficult circumstances are given opportunities to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
Through programmes such as the MoM, assistance continues to be extended to single parents, low-income households, and individuals in need of critical support.
For Singh and her children, the new home represents far more than bricks; it symbolises security, comfort, and a fresh start after a period marked by personal tragedy and uncertainty.
The intervention will provide the family with a place they can truly call their own, while creating a more stable environment for the children to grow and thrive.
The handing-over ceremony, taking place just one day before Mother’s Day, carries deep emotional significance.
It served as a reminder of the sacrifices made daily by mothers across Guyana who work tirelessly to care for and provide for their families despite immense challenges. The gesture also underscored the importance of community support and national initiatives aimed at improving lives and strengthening families.
As construction gets underway, Singh expressed gratitude for the assistance, noting that the opportunity has given her renewed hope and confidence for the future of her children.
The Men on Mission initiative continues to play a vital role in transforming lives and delivering meaningful support to families across the country, Minister Mustapha said yesterday.
