A MEMBER of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was injured on Monday after a patrol operation came under fire along the country’s western border, according to an official statement from the Force.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 hrs during a boat patrol in Region Seven, as ranks were escorting three civilian vessels transporting personnel and cargo from Makapa to Eteringbang.
According to the GDF, the patrol came under attack in the vicinity of Black Water, prompting a swift response.
“Preliminary reports indicate that at approximately 11:30 hours, a GDF Boat Patrol escorting three civilian boats transporting personnel and cargo from Makapa to Eteringbang came under fire in the vicinity of Black Water. The patrol returned fire and manoeuvred the convoy out of the area,” the release stated.
One soldier sustained two gunshot wounds to the right leg during the exchange. The GDF confirmed that the injured rank received immediate first aid on site before being evacuated to Georgetown for further medical attention.
Despite the incident, the Force emphasised that it continues to maintain a strong operational posture along the western frontier.
“The Guyana Defence Force continues to maintain an active operational presence along the western border. The Force remains fully committed to the protection of its personnel and the safeguarding of Guyana’s territorial integrity,” the GDF said.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
