An East Canje, Berbice man was on Thursday remanded to prison after being charged with the attempted murder of his former lover, whom he is accused of shooting.

The accused, Damion Morgan, 28, of Fort Ordinance, East Canje, Berbice, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with attempted murder and discharging a loaded firearm with intent, committed against Vasanti Gordon of Islington Village, East Bank Berbice.

Morgan appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias. The charges were read to him, and he was not required to enter a plea.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Collin Clark noted that the case file is currently incomplete and, based on advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), additional work is required. However, he objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant is a repeat offender, pointing out that he is currently before the court on a robbery under arms charge.

The prosecutor further noted that Morgan was placed on bail for that matter and stressed the seriousness of the offence he is now charged with, highlighting that a firearm was used.

Morgan’s attorney, Stacy Gooding, in her plea for bail, told the court that the defendant is a taxi driver operating in the New Amsterdam–Canje area. She added that he is now a heavy-duty operator in the interior and is scheduled to commence work on May 4.

However, bail was refused, and the accused was remanded to prison. He is expected to return to court on May 14.

It was previously reported that the incident occurred on April 11, 2026, at Islington Village, East Bank Berbice, leaving Gordon nursing multiple gunshot wounds.

According to police, initial investigations revealed that Gordon and the accused were previously in a relationship, but separated due to allegations of infidelity and physical abuse.

On the day in question, at about 17:00 hrs, Gordon was in her burgundy Toyota Premio (PAD 6618) when the accused approached her with a handgun, discharged several rounds at her feet, struck her about the head with the weapon, and threatened to kill her.

The victim was taken to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital, where doctors discovered four puncture wounds to her right leg and thigh. She was subsequently admitted.
