THE April 2026 session of the Demerara Criminal Assizes officially commenced on April 7 at the High Court in Georgetown, ushering in a new cycle of criminal trials with 138 cases listed for hearing.

The opening was marked by a traditional ceremonial parade by ranks of the Guyana Police Force, adding formality to the start of proceedings.

Justice Nicola Pierre took the salute and inspected the Guard of Honour. The ceremony was also attended by the Chief Justice, Puisne Judges, the Registrar, and Marshals of the Supreme Court of Judicature.

Four judges have been appointed to preside over matters during the session, each assigned to specific panels. Justice Sandil Kissoon will oversee Panel One, while Justice Nicola Pierre presides over Panel Two.

Panel Three falls under the jurisdiction of Justice Joy Persaud-Singh, and Justice Jacqueline Josiah-Graham will handle matters in Panel Four, which is dedicated to the Sexual Offences Court.

The caseload for this session includes a range of serious offences, among them murder, manslaughter, attempted murder, sexual offences, attempts to cause explosions endangering life or property, and trafficking in narcotics.

Despite the substantial number of cases, the judiciary has reported improvements in efficiency. The introduction of additional panels and the assignment of more judges have contributed to reduced waiting times for trials and more timely resolution of matters.

The developments highlight ongoing efforts within the judicial system to strengthen case management and enhance operational coordination, ensuring that serious criminal cases are addressed more effectively.
