MORE than 22,000 streetlights have been installed across Guyana under the government’s National Streetlight Programme, significantly improving nighttime visibility and enhancing public safety in communities nationwide.

Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, announced during a recent stakeholder engagement that, as of last Monday, a total of 22,308 streetlights had been installed in areas where works are currently ongoing. He noted that a substantial portion of these installations has been concentrated in Berbice.

The initiative forms part of a broader national effort to modernise infrastructure and create safer environments for residents, motorists, and pedestrians. According to the minister, the expansion of street lighting is already contributing to brighter communities and improved security after dark.

All installations under the programme are being executed under the supervision of certified electricians and licensed contractors to ensure adherence to safety and quality standards.

The National Streetlight Programme is also aimed at reducing road accidents by improving visibility along roadways, particularly in high-traffic and previously underlit areas. Officials say the ongoing rollout will continue to target communities across the country as the government intensifies its focus on public safety and infrastructural development.
