A MAN will be spending the next 20 years behind bars after being sentenced for the 2023 murder of his neighbour in Kitty, Georgetown.
George Moses of Lamaha Street, Newtown, Kitty, Georgetown, received the sentence from Justice Gino Persaud at the High Court in Demerara.
Moses expressed remorse to the victim’s family, apologising for the events that led to Anthony Williams’ death. He told the court that he did not anticipate the confrontation and that the situation escalated unexpectedly.
Justice Persaud explained that the starting point for a murder conviction is 30 years.
Aggravating factors, including the use of a knife, Moses’ pursuit of Williams after he tried to escape and the presence of children, led the judge to initially raise the sentence to 33 years.
A three-year reduction was applied for Moses’ apology, while a further 10-year reduction was granted due to his early guilty plea, bringing the final sentence to 20 years.
Time already spent in remand from July 2023 to January 2026—two years and six months—was deducted, leaving 17 years and six months remaining.
Court records show that the two men shared the same building. On March 13, 2023, Moses allegedly chased Williams’ children downstairs, leading to a confrontation.
He reportedly stabbed Williams in the back as he fled to a neighbouring yard, where Moses inflicted three additional stab wounds.
A police corporal witnessed the attack and heard Moses shout, “I’ll kill you today,” before discarding the knife into a nearby trench.
Williams later died on April 10, 2023, from haemorrhage and shock, according to a post-mortem examination.
Moses was subsequently arrested and cautioned by police.
