POLICE ranks from Regional Division 4 ‘C’ have intensified efforts to address several community concerns affecting residents within the Mon Repos/La Reconnaissance area, following a meeting with councillors and officials from the Mon Repos/La Reconnaissance Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) aimed at strengthening collaboration and improving public order.
The meeting was held on Wednesday at the Regional Headquarters Conference Room at the Cove and John Police Station and was led by Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Khali Pareshram.
He was joined by Deputy Commander, Superintendent J. Dufu; Divisional Traffic Officer, Assistant Superintendent Massay; Officer-in-Charge of Sub-Division One, Deputy Superintendent Delph; Officer-in-Charge of Sub-Division Two, Deputy Superintendent Wallace, along with Inspectors and Sergeants attached to police stations and outposts within the NDC.
Representing the Mon Repos/La Reconnaissance NDC were constituency councillors K. Jailal, D. Verma, Sooklall and Vishnu Ramcharran. Also present were Clerk of Markets, Melissa Fraser and Overseer Nalani Mohamed.
During the engagement, participants discussed a number of challenges affecting the community, particularly traffic congestion during market days and peak school hours.
Officials noted that the situation is often worsened by vendors occupying roadways and the high volume of parents transporting students to nearby schools.
Other concerns raised included illegal vending, security within the market area, garbage collection, the lighting of fires in public spaces, derelict vehicles and illegal structures. Encumbrances along access roads, including trucks, containers and other obstructions that restrict the free flow of traffic, were also highlighted as issues requiring urgent attention.
A key aspect of the discussion focused on clarifying the respective roles and responsibilities of the NDC and the Guyana Police Force in addressing these concerns.
Officials stressed that improved coordination between both bodies is essential to effectively manage public spaces, enforce regulations and ensure safer communities.
The meeting also underscored the importance of stronger partnerships among the Guyana Police Force, the Neighbourhood Democratic Council and Community Policing Groups. Stakeholders agreed that closer collaboration would help improve public safety, maintain order in busy commercial areas such as markets and enhance the overall well-being of residents within the Mon Repos and La Reconnaissance communities.
Police officials indicated that continued engagement with local authorities and community representatives will remain a priority as efforts continue to address the issues and promote safer, more organised communities within Division 4 ‘C’.
