Teen mother’s death caused by heart failure, anaemia

THE police in Regional Division Two are continuing an investigation into the death of 14-year-old Aleena Preetam of Supenaam, Essequibo Coast, whose sudden passing between Sunday night and early Monday morning has been medically attributed to heart failure and anaemia.

According to the police, preliminary enquiries revealed that the teenager, who lived with her parents and her one-month-old baby, was last seen alive at around 19:30hrs on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at her residence.

Family members reportedly attempted to wake her at approximately 05:30hrs on Monday, February 23, but found her unresponsive. She was immediately escorted to the Suddie Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.

An initial examination of the body revealed no visible marks of violence. The remains were then placed at the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination(PME).

The police said the autopsy was conducted on Thursday, February 26, 2026, between 10:30hrs and 10:45hrs at the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh. The official causes of death were given as heart failure and anaemia.

The body was handed over to the family for burial after the PME .

An investigation continues as the police continue to address all relevant legal and procedural matters arising from the circumstances surrounding the teen’s death.
