THE long-awaited Hosororo Secondary School is poised to significantly expand access to secondary education in Guyana’s hinterland, with the state-of-the-art institution set to accommodate at least 528 students from the communities in Region One.
According to the Ministry of Education, the new secondary school will serve approximately 475 students currently enrolled at the Hosororo Primary Top, along with 53 students from the Wauna Primary Top. In a Facebook post on Friday, the ministry confirmed that the facility will soon be ready to receive both students and teachers.
A joint team from the Ministry of Education and the Regional Democratic Council recently conducted a follow-up visit to the school compound to ensure that all systems and facilities are in place ahead of the opening.
The Ministry said the development represents another concrete step in fulfilling the Government of Guyana’s commitment to ensuring every child has access to quality education, regardless of geographic location.
The Ministry said that with continued investments in education infrastructure across hinterland and riverine communities, Universal Secondary Education is steadily being realised in Guyana.
The Hosororo Secondary School is expected to rank among the most advanced educational facilities in Guyana and the wider Caribbean. Contracts for the $2.6 billion project were signed in 2023, and the campus features 29 classrooms, a fully equipped science centre, and a technical and vocational education and training (TVET) centre offering both industrial and home economics programmes.
The complex also includes a student dormitory and visiting area, as well as duplex living quarters for teachers.
In October last year, Minister of Education Sonia Parag visited the school to assess progress and ensure the project remained on schedule. At the time, the contractors committed to completing the facility by January 24, 2026.
Once operational, the Hosororo Secondary School is expected to transform educational opportunities for students in the North West District, reducing travel burdens on families and reinforcing the government’s broader push to deliver equitable, modern education nationwide.
