– becomes 10th testing facility to meet national standards
The Geo-Enviro Support Services (Guyana) Inc. Laboratory is now the newest addition to the list of certified testing laboratories in Guyana, having successfully attained certification under the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) Laboratory Certification Programme. The milestone was officially marked during a special ceremony held on Monday, May 19, at the facility’s location in Ogle, East Coast Demerara, where the laboratory received its official certificate and plaque.
Owned and operated by Taijpaul Dayaram, a Guyanese investor from the Canadian diaspora, the company has evolved into a full-fledged laboratory offering a wide range of environmental and construction-related services.
These include geotechnical drilling and sampling, footing inspection, surveying, and comprehensive testing of construction materials such as concrete and asphalt. With a staff of 37 and plans to expand nationally, the company prides itself on delivering quality control through the use of modern technologies.
Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Dayaram recalled the early difficulties of establishing the lab in 2016. “Unfortunately, there was no environment ready to take on diaspora investments in a serious way,” he noted. It wasn’t until 2020, when the Government of Guyana actively encouraged diaspora engagement, that the lab began its operations in earnest. Mr. Dayaram credited GO-Invest and the Diaspora Unit for the support they provided in helping to bring his vision to life.
He cited two key motivations for his investment: the need for quality assurance to support Guyana’s rapidly growing infrastructure sector, and a deep love for his country and family. “My company can take on any project,” he said confidently, adding that his team is made up of the “go-to guys” who understand the demands of the industry.
The decision to pursue GNBS certification, he explained, was driven by the lab’s desire to uphold national standards and improve credibility. “The company certificate is highly valued, and with the addition of the GNBS logo, wherever you see our name, you’ll know it is a certified quality service,” Dayaram stated. He further commended the GNBS for the comprehensive support and training provided during the certification process, describing the experience as one where the GNBS team “held the hands of the staff and took them all the way to certification.”
As the country prepares to observe World Environment Day on June 5, Mr. Dayaram revealed that Geo-Enviro is exploring environmentally friendly initiatives, including a programme to recycle waste generated during testing, such as washing asphalt materials.
Geo-Enviro Support Services (Guyana) Inc. is now the tenth testing laboratory in Guyana to be certified under the National Laboratory Standard GYS 170:2021 – General Requirements for the Operation of a Laboratory. The GNBS has encouraged more laboratories to follow suit and take the path to certification, pledging continued guidance and support for businesses striving for quality and compliance.
Mr. Dayaram had this message for others in the industry: “It’s not always about the money and competition. My company can’t handle all the clients in this country. Let us all have a level playing field. I would encourage any laboratory in this business to pursue GNBS certification.”
