reaffirms government’s commitment to housing, water development
RESIDENTS of Charity on the Essequibo Coast recently had the opportunity to voice their concerns directly to Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, during an interactive engagement aimed at addressing critical issues related to housing, water, and infrastructure.
Minister Croal’s recent visit underscored the government’s proactive approach to community development and its commitment to improving the lives of all Guyanese.
During the meeting, Minister Croal reassured residents of the government’s unwavering dedication to working alongside them, highlighting that at least 95 per cent of the administration’s manifesto promises have already been fulfilled. He emphasised that these achievements are a testament to the government’s steadfast efforts to build a stronger, more prosperous Guyana for future generations.
“Now more than ever, the future for young people is bright; their future is secure,” Minister Croal stated, underscoring the administration’s vision for national development.
WATER SUPPLY ENHANCEMENTS ON THE HORIZON
Reflecting on the government’s progress since assuming office in 2020, Minister Croal outlined the significant strides made in expanding access to potable water. He noted that the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has made key improvements in the region, including the upgrade of the Lima Water Treatment Plant, which has tripled its output from 5 to 15 million litres per day (MLD). This enhancement has resulted in a consistent 24-hour water supply for residents.
Further improvements to the regional water supply are in the pipeline. Minister Croal revealed that the Onderneeming Water Treatment Plant is set to become operational soon, while work has commenced on another facility at Maria’s Delight. Once completed, these projects will ensure that 100 per cent of residents in the region have access to treated water.
Additionally, GWI has deployed a PAT-rig to drill wells in the Pomeroon, guaranteeing that even remote communities benefit from reliable water access. These initiatives align with the administration’s broader goal of expanding first-time water access and enhancing water quality nationwide.
On the housing front, Minister Croal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the backlog of applications in Region Two. He provided updates on the development of two new housing areas at Onderneeming and Charity (Buxton/St. Joseph), ensuring that more Guyanese families secure homeownership opportunities.
Minister Croal also acknowledged the challenges posed by ongoing drainage issues in the Buxton/St. Joseph area, which have delayed access for allottees. However, he assured residents that the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) is actively working on a solution that will soon provide access to housing beneficiaries.
COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENT ACROSS ALL SECTORS
Beyond housing and water, Minister Croal emphasised the government’s continued investment in education, healthcare, energy, social services, and agriculture. He reinforced that these initiatives are pivotal in fostering national development and ensuring that all Guyanese enjoy an improved standard of living.
“Work is happening in every sector,” he affirmed, highlighting the administration’s holistic approach to governance.
Minister Croal was accompanied by Regional Chairman, Ms. Vilma De Silva; Director of Community Development at the Central Housing and Planning Authority, Mr. Gladwin Charles; and other officials. Their presence reinforced the collaborative efforts between the government and regional authorities to address community concerns effectively.
As the administration advances its agenda, residents of Charity can look forward to continued progress in housing and water infrastructure, ensuring that development reaches every corner of the country.
