Watched by small gathering, the opening night of the One Guyana President’s Cup Doubles and Singles Squash Championship commenced on Thursday Evening at the newly constructed Doubles Courts at the National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue.
The action severed off with action in the mixed doubles and Boys Doubles.

On Court 1, the Bacchus siblings (Nidal and Nijad), making their debut on the Doubles Court lost to the more seasoned Black Edwards and Demitri Lowe 11-1, 11-3.
The Bacchus brothers, watched by their mom and dad, seemed a bit confused with four players on the same court and managed only one point in their first but looked more comfortable in the second game which they lost 3-11 as Edwards and Lowe looked in full control against their opponents.
Edwards and Lowe will face Shiloh Asregado and Richard Rodrigues today from noon after drawing the bye in the first round.
On Court 2, both matches in the mixed doubles proved entertaining and showcased Guyana’s top players.

The first match, between Alex Arjoon and Mary Fung-a-Fat and Jonathan Antczak and Kirsten Gomes, was very competitive with both pairs demonstrating skill and tenacity in a match that went three games and lasted just short of half of an hour.
The first stanza saw good squash from both pairs with the points fluctuating. But it was Arjoon and Fung-a-Fat who prevailed, 11-10.

The second game produced an excellent come-from-behind win as Antaczak and Gomes capitalised on a few mistakes from their opponents to win 11-5 to take the match into a third game.
The third game tested the fitness of the players with them matching each other shot-for-shot while employing intelligent tactics as Fung-a-Fat; despite being accidentally struck on her forehead by Gomes’ Racquet and her partner Arjoon won 11-10
The final match of the night was ‘Siblings against Siblings.

Shomari Wiltshire, who (arrived in Guyana on Thursday evening) and his sister Larissa battling Ashley Khalid and her brother Jason-Ray.
But when the dust had settled the Khalid siblings emerged victorious 11-9, 11-8.
The winners from Thursday night’s matches will face off today (Saturday) from 12:30 pm.
