TWO men are in police custody following a late-night incident that resulted in the discovery of an unlicensed firearm and ended with one suspect accidentally shooting himself in the foot.
Omar Cliffe, 24, a plumber from William Street, Kitty, and Cort Williams, 23, an AC technician from ‘B’ Field Sophia, were arrested around 23:30 hrs on Wednesday by patrolling officers from the Alberttown Police Station.
According to the police, the incident unfolded when police officers, on routine patrol, observed two men on a motorcycle (registration #CN 8462) on William Street, Kitty. Upon noticing the police vehicle, the suspects immediately stopped their motorcycle and fled on foot into a nearby passageway.
During the ensuing chase, officers witnessed Cliffe attempting to dispose of what appeared to be a firearm. In the process, the weapon was discharged, causing Cliffe to fall with what was later determined to be a graze wound to his right foot.
Both suspects were apprehended at the scene.
According to the police, the ranks recovered a .40 caliber pistol containing five rounds of ammunition. A spent shell was also found in the area where the accidental discharge occurred.
The suspects were taken to Alberttown Police Station, where the firearm and ammunition were secured as evidence for ballistics analysis.
Cliffe was subsequently escorted under police guard to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for medical treatment of his minor injury.
The firearm, ammunition, and spent shell were marked and are being stored in separate evidence bags for forensic examination.
Police officials on Thursday confirm that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
