THE Office of the Prime Minister Industry and Innovation Unit (OPM-IIU), in partnership with SBM Offshore Guyana, launched the 2024 Innovation Challenge at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre on the East Coast of Demerara.
This year’s challenge, held under the theme “Transitioning Through Innovation,” will run from August 30 to September 1, 2024, and features 14 teams competing for a total prize pool of GYD $2 million. The first-place winner will receive GYD $1 million, the second-place winner will receive GYD $500,000, and the Best Emerging/Young Team will also receive GYD $500,000.

Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Prime Minister, Dr. Alfred King, emphasised the goal of the Innovation Challenge: to engage over 150,000 youths in coding and app development through the GOAL platform, led by Professor Jacob Opadeyi, a recognised expert in the field. Dr. King highlighted the limitless potential of creating the right app for the market, emphasising the importance of understanding the needs of both private and public sectors.
“We must be deliberate in our strategy for developing talent capable of creating platforms that meet two essential criteria: addressing the needs of our people and aligning with the current stage of our development,” said Dr. King. He underscored the dynamic nature of technology, noting the rapid advancements in the fourth industrial revolution, where big data and cyber technologies play a crucial role in enhancing livelihoods.

Director of the Industry and Innovation Unit, Shahrukh Hussain, spoke about the benefits of participating in the Innovation Challenge. He highlighted that the event encourages creativity and innovation, allowing participants to explore uncharted territories and develop solutions with the potential to make a significant impact. “This challenge provides an environment for collaboration and networking,” said Hussain. “Participants will have the opportunity to work alongside like-minded individuals, fostering an atmosphere that can lead to more holistic and innovative solutions.”
Hussain also pointed out that the challenge offers valuable opportunities for participants to enhance their problem-solving skills by addressing real-world challenges within a limited timeframe. It encourages adaptability and critical thinking, allowing participants to refine their solutions based on feedback and team dynamics.

This year’s Innovation Challenge is centered on developing an app to help users track and find transportation services throughout Guyana.
Martin Cheung, General Manager of SBM Offshore Guyana, expressed his excitement about continuing the company’s support for the Innovation Challenge. He noted that the initiative aligns with SBM’s commitment to fostering local content development and enhancing the lives of Guyanese people. “By participating in the Innovation Challenge, you have the chance to showcase your skills in information and communication technology, creativity, and problem-solving, while learning from industry experts here to mentor and guide you,” Cheung said.

Cheung further emphasised that by encouraging and rewarding innovation, SBM Offshore contributes to the growth and progress of Guyana, particularly in the evolving oil and gas sector. SBM’s goal is to create pathways for participants to develop their expertise and contribute meaningfully to the sustainable development of Guyana’s oil and gas industry. They aim to ensure that future generations are equipped to tackle challenges and find innovative solutions on a global scale.
The 2024 Innovation Challenge represents a significant step toward empowering Guyana’s youth, fostering a culture of innovation, and driving the country’s technological advancement.
