IN a proactive step towards enhancing workplace safety, six Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) officers from the Ministry of Labour have completed specialised training in Confined Space Entrant and Attendant Training.
The training, which took place on Thursday, June 27, equips these officers with crucial skills to ensure safe operations in confined workspaces.
Conducted by HHSL Safety Systems (Guyana) Inc., the intensive one-day course was led by Course Instructor and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Mr. Preslee Paul. It focused on preparing participants to navigate the unique challenges of enclosed spaces with limited entry and exit points, such as tanks, pits, vats, silos, or vessels.

The tailored curriculum covered comprehensive aspects including hazard identification, risk assessment, proper use of safety equipment, implementation of rescue procedures, and overall safe practices within confined spaces. This training is pivotal in safeguarding both workers and supervisors from potential hazards associated with confined environments.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to ensuring that our OSH officers are well-prepared and equipped with the necessary expertise to effectively fulfill their responsibilities,” commented a spokesperson from the Ministry of Labour.
Among the beneficiaries of this specialised training were Assistant Chief OSH Officers, Mr. Roydon Croal and Ms. Maxean Bess; Senior OSH Officer, Mr. Darwin Bourne; and Regional OSH Officers, Ms. Babita Singh, Ms. Nazmoon Jafarally, and Mr. Naipaul Persaud. Each participant received certification.

The training session formed part of broader efforts by the Ministry to enhance occupational safety across various sectors. It complements ongoing training initiatives aimed at continuously upgrading the skills and capabilities of OSH officers nationwide.
As Guyana progresses towards bolstering workplace safety standards, such targeted training initiatives are crucial in mitigating risks and ensuring a secure environment for all workers involved in high-risk operational settings.
