A drug dealer has been jailed for three years and one month following a trial at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
Forty-six-year-old Ian Griffith had the jail sentence imposed on him on Thursday by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul.
Griffith of North East, La Penitence, Georgetown, had been on trial for being in possession of 2.330 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The convict was also fined $3,495,000.
According to a release from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), on March 3, 2022, ranks were conducting an operation between Ruby and Den Amstel, both in Region Three.
During the operation, Griffith was arrested with two parcels of suspected cocaine weighing 2.330 kilogrammes. The cocaine had a street value of $2.6 million at the time.
This is not Griffith’s first run-in with the law.
In 2016, he was charged with attempting to smuggle 1.004 kilogrammes of cocaine out of Guyana by using a 15-year-old Guyanese boy, who is a United States of America (USA) resident. The cocaine was reportedly concealed in the handles of the teen’s luggage.
The matter against Griffith was, however, dismissed.
