THE Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) conducted a targetted operation at the Eccles Housing Scheme, located in East Bank Demerara, on Friday, where they intercepted a car with five large bales wrapped in black plastic, containing a total of two hundred and fifty brick-like parcels suspected to be cannabis.
The motor vehicle was driven by a male occupant. Subsequently, a further search was conducted at the residence of Rohan Rambarran, also known as “Sauce,” a resident of Eccles Housing Scheme. During the search, officers discovered seven 9mm live rounds of ammunition in a magazine.
Rohan Rambarran was promptly arrested and escorted to CANU’s Headquarters, along with the seized ammunition and suspected cannabis. Laboratory tests later confirmed the substance to be foreign marijuana, commonly known as “Creepy.”

CANU, in a statement, noted that the arrest was not Rambarran’s first encounter with law enforcement. In December 2009, Rambarran, along with four others, was convicted (in Barbados) for the importation, possession, and trafficking of 91.3 kilograms of cannabis and 119.4 kilograms of cocaine.
The illicit substances were concealed in logs and discovered on November 29, 2005. Rambarran received concurrent sentences of twenty-five years for trafficking cannabis and thirty years for trafficking cocaine.
However, on August 29, 2019, the Barbados Court of Appeal ordered Rambarran’s release on time served, and he was subsequently deported to Guyana.
The recent operation underscores CANU’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and apprehending repeat offenders like Rambarran. Further investigations into the matter are ongoing.
