THE Prime Minister’s Representative and People’s Progressive Party/Civic Region Two councillor, Arnold Adams, has said that efforts have intensified within Anna Regina to keep stray animals off the township’s roads.
He made this disclosure during a meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) where he emphasised that stray animals have been the cause of many road accidents in recent times.
In presenting his local government report for the region, the councillor said the Mayor of Anna Regina, Devin Mohan and the council’s workers are working assiduously to keep the road free of stray animals.
He said that any animal found straying on the roadway will be impounded.
According to him, this is part of the region’s efforts to protect all categories of road users.
He therefore used the opportunity to call on those rearing cattle to ensure that they have grazing grounds for their animals and to keep them off the roadway.
Adams also called on drivers to proceed with caution, bearing in mind that stray animals are often on the roadways.
He said that the council has started the process of removing these animals and already, a number of them have been impounded.
“We need to get the animals off the road. There are numerous animals roaming around and it’s not safe. I am happy that the council has stepped up on same and [is] doing this to ensure that those using the roadways are safe; the lawlessness must stop,” Adams said.
Meanwhile, Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva said that she supports the council’s initiative and also called on those rearing animals to keep them off the road. She said that road users’ lives are precious and it’s important that they are safe at all times
Only recently a motorcycle crashed into a cow resulting in extensive injuries to the cyclist.
