CITY Constable Lance Corporal Clifton Pellew was on Tuesday freed of a rape charge after the alleged victim refused to give evidence against him.
Pellew was on trial at the Demerara High Court before Justice Navindra Singh and a 12-member jury.
He had denied the allegation which stated that on August 15, 2017, he engaged in sexual activity with the then 16-year-old boy.
On Tuesday, the victim said that he has moved on with his life and opts not to testify.
In light of the circumstances, the presiding Judge ordered the jury to return a formal not-guilty verdict in favour of Pellew.
The state was represented by prosecutor Nefeeza Baig.
According to reports, the City Constabulary officer was allegedly caught having sex with the boy who had been detained earlier for loitering.
Another corporal, who allegedly saw the act, later reported the incident to his supervisor.
The other officer was dismissed along with the suspect, but they were both subsequently reinstated following the intervention of the Ministry of Communities.
Activists had picketed City Hall on several occasions demanding that Pellew be charged.
