TO better their lives and that of their families, 254 persons, on Wednesday, graduated from various programmes offered by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) during a simple ceremony held at the National Cultural Centre.

According to a BIT release, the graduation did not just focus on young persons as among the successful batches of graduates were people of all ages, who went after a similar goal to learn a skill and become certified.

Some of the graduates opted for vocational courses such as Cosmetology, Early Childhood Development, and Commercial Food Preparation, while graduates went with technical courses such as Heavy-Duty Equipment Operation, Electrical Installation, and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Servicing and Repairs.

“Despite whatever the graduates had selected when they first registered as prospective trainees, they were celebrated… through a huge graduation ceremony held at the National Cultural Centre for the 254 graduates that put in hard work and dedication on completing the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme,” BIT stated.

The TVET programme was designed by the Government of Guyana to promote sustainability of Guyanese livelihood, through retraining retirees, upskilling employees, equipping young people with relevant skills for today’s job market or giving reassurance to single parents that not all hope is loss.

Officials of the BIT and the Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, attended the ceremony in support of the graduates’ accomplishments and future endeavours.

According to BIT, the graduates may choose to become entrepreneurs in the field they were certified or pursue jobs that are in demand for the technical and vocational workforce.
Minister Hamilton’s aim is to work with the team at BIT to increase skills delivery for every Guyanese, wherever they reside.

The Chief Executive Officer (ag) of BIT, Onyekachukwu Eastman-Onwuzirike; Director at BIT, Penelope Harris; Human Resource Officer, Melinda Kelly; and Technical Officer, Jason Clarke, among others, were present at the graduation.
