MINISTER within the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs, Kwame McCoy has expressed concerns that the Kaieteur News, in a full-page advertisement in the September 1, 2022 edition, embarked on an unjustified attack on the Guyana Chronicle.
Minister McCoy said that such attacks only serve to emasculate freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
“Kaieteur News crusades as the authority on matters of oil and gas. Therefore, the advertisement must be seen as a frantic attempt to control the narrative in this important sector that is benefitting all Guyanese. The publication is keen to suppress information that challenges its narratives, even at the expense of the insidious erosion of the public’s basic right to information,” the minister said.
As a media house, Kaieteur News, should be more encouraging of Guyanese sharing their views on matters of national importance whether the publication agrees or disagrees with those views, said Minister McCoy, pointing out that this is the hallmark of a true media outlet.
