ODESSIA Sam, a 42-year-old woman from Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, is now dead after the motorcycle, on which she was the pillion rider, collided with a Mercedes Benz Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) on Wednesday, a police statement said.

The accident occurred around 15:20 hours on Nelson Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

The motorcycle #CH 1099 was ridden by Wendel Oudkerk of Lamaha Springs, Georgetown. The SUV #PSS 7007, owned by Azruddin Mohamed, was driven by 41-year-old Nadia Mohamed of Houston Gardens, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

The SUV “was proceeding west along the northern drive lane of the southern carriageway of Nelson Mandela Avenue whilst motorcycle #CH 1099 was proceeding north along Critchlow Avenue,” the police statement said.

Based on the police report, the rider of the motor cycle reportedly failed to stop as he approached the junction of Nelson Mandela and Critchlow Avenue.

Police said the motorcyclist, with Sam on back, “proceeded to cross the road going from south to north, in a bid to proceed onto the northern carriageway at an opening between the median.”
As a result, the police noted, the motorcycle crossed into the path of the SUV.

“… [T]he front of the motor jeep came into contact with the right side of the motor cycle, and due to the collision, the motor cyclist along with the pillion rider were thrown onto the road surface where they received injuries about their bodies,” the police statement said.

Oudkerk was picked up in a semi-conscious state by emergency responders. He was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Sam, on the other hand, was placed into a police vehicle for transport to GPHC, the police report said.

Sam was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body is currently awaiting autopsy at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, police noted.

Meanwhile, the motorcycle rider was admitted to the public hospital’s critical bay where, police said, his condition is still serious.

At the accident scene, police said a Notice of Intended Prosecution was prepared and served on Mohamed, the driver of the SUV. She was administered two breathalyser tests and her blood alcohol level reported as .000 per cent both times. She remains in custody assisting with the investigation, police said.

As part of the investigation, law enforcement officers took photographs of the scene and also checked for CCTV footage of the accident, police further said.

Police said Sam, the now deceased woman, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
