A 29-year-old construction worker was, on Friday, charged for the murder of Troy Hicks, who was badly beaten and chopped at Hendricks Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara and was remanded to prison.

Devon Mohamed, called ‘Chike Baba’ of Sideline Dam, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

Mohamed was not required to plead to the capital offence which alleged that, on May 28, 2022, at Triumph, he murdered Hicks, 45, of North Beterverwagting, ECD.

He was remanded to prison until July 14, 2022.

According to a police press release, earlier on the day in question, Hicks and Mohamed were allegedly involved in a misunderstanding, but that was quickly quelled.

Later that day, Hicks was reportedly walking on Hendricks Street when he was attacked by Mohamed, who was armed with a cutlass.

It is alleged, by the police, that Mohamed dealt Hicks several chops about his head and shoulders. Hicks, who was armed with a dog chain and cutlass, chopped Mohammed to his forehead.

“The now-deceased man then ran into a corner shop after a group of men started to pelt him with bricks. He also pelted bottles at the men and managed to run north on Republic Drive, Beterverwagting where the men ran after him, and where he collapsed,’ the police release said.

Hicks was then picked up in a conscious state by the police and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporationwhere he was pronounced dead on arrival.
