Three women die from COVID-19; 65 new cases recorded

EVEN as the government continues to implement systems to tackle the deadly COVID-19 disease, three more persons have died from the disease, taking Guyana’s overall death toll to 1,138, the Ministry of Health reported on Saturday.

The ministry said that the latest fatalities are three women; an 80-year-old woman who died on February 10 and a 57-year-old woman who died on February 11 — both women were from Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice) and were unvaccinated.

The remaining fatality is a fully vaccinated 49-year-old woman from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica, who died on February 12.

Meanwhile, there are currently 2,030 active COVID-19 cases in Guyana, following the addition of 65 new cases on February 12, 2022; they were recorded in eight of the 10 administrative regions.

Region One recorded five new cases; Region Two recorded three new cases; nine new cases were recorded in Region Three. Regions Four and Five recorded 11 cases each; Region Six recorded 17 cases; while Regions Seven and Nine recorded two cases and seven cases each, respectively.

The country has now recorded a total of 62,221 cases since March 2020.

Of the active cases, 11 persons are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the National Infectious Diseases Hospital, Liliendaal; 78 are in institutional isolation; 1,927 are in home isolation, and 14 are in institutional quarantine.

Many of the persons infected with the virus are said to be asymptomatic, that is, they are not exhibiting symptoms.

The updated COVID–19 Emergency Measures are in force until Feb 28, 2021. They may be extended or amended by notice of the Minister of Health, after an assessment of the prevailing public health conditions of the pandemic.

As per the current measures, all persons are required to wear face masks when leaving their homes; physical distancing and adequate sanitisation are recommended.
